Art Ludwig on Water Storage

Started the book Water Storage, Tanks, Cisterns, Auqifers, and Ponds, Art Ludwig (Oasis Design May 30, 2005).  

The book discusses general design principles for construction and use water systems on your land.  I haven't finished reading the book yet, but it is full of detailed drawings and suggestions for avoiding common mistakes.  It has a good analysis of how to choose the best system for your homestead, helping to decide the kinds of storage to use, be it tanks, groundwater, or ponds.

Rough pre-spring garden plan

Working on a rough annual garden plan for next spring.

The image to the left shows my general plan.  It includes three trellis systems for growing tomatoes.   There might be some other vegitables mixed there.  Maybe cucumber and basil growing in those same beds.

My garlic was planted in the fall.  Still have to figure out what herbs or vegitables will  go into the beds.  The beds will go roughly in the area of the green. The yellow area represents pathways.

Emergency Power: Planning Battery Backup System

Here you are reading a blog post by a person who is a total novice when it comes to electricity.  To create a battery backup system for our homestead there is a certain level of learning that has to take place before it can happen.

The first thing I did before I began even planning the project was to buy Steven Harris's Battery Bank Videos.  You can find these at the link here in this paragraph, and below with the engineering details.

After watching Steven's first video, I am leaning toward buying the submerged, lead-acid, golf cart batter for my bank.  However, I still need to figure out how many I am going to need.  So I will need to watch video two (how to make one) before proceeding further.

I am still leaning toward the golf cart style battery backup system.  I downloaded both videos to my hard drive.  In case of power failure, if I can get the computer running with my generator, I will be able to review them.  Of course, the idea is to get set up first so things are less chaotic in the time of stress.

Garden Journal


Experienced gardeners tell you that you should keep a garden journal. They say that you can go back and figure out mistakes or patterns when stuff happens in the garden . . . good and bad. That helps you keep a better garden.

Following that advice, I started a garden journal online one a few months ago.  Really, its been a stumbling effort.  I've already made some key omissions.  Like when I failed to record the first frost dates of the season last month.  The journal so far is only organized by chronological post date.  That makes it hard to see patterns.  This problem may be mitigated by using Labels or keywords so one can use to sort the blog posts.   

Here are some of the concepts that ought to be included in an effective garden journal.  

  • Weather, including the frost and heat dates.  

Valuable and necessary information for any less cold tolerant plants.  Not only should you write about historical information that actually happens, but you ought to be thinking about the first and last frost dates, and the heat stretches, as they approach so you can watch and observe their affects.  Record rainfall, wind, and temperature patterns.  Analyze the affects of the energies in your climate.  Write about what happens to plants in the peak heat of summer?

  • To Do lists.
Back in the Navy we called it stayinig ahead of the airplane.  Give yourself some to do lists ahead of time so you are not caught with your pants down. Pay attention to dates.  Incorporate your calendar into your planning so you are reminding yourself of the deadlines.  Gardening seems much about managing deadlines and time lines.  

Figure out when your plants need to be pruned, divided, or moved. 

  • Seeds and performance.
What kind of performance do the best in your soil and climate?  Which plant can tolerate bugs and heat, etc.  Figure out which of the tomato plants thrive. Then, save those seeds and plant those varieties.

  • Plant Types
Hone in on each of the plants and study them in detail--dates of germination, appearance of blooms, and fruit, harvest dates.   How do plants do around other varieties.  Use labels and keywords for each plant so you can sort posts.  Incorprate the information into your plans.

  • Supplements
Record the kind of amendments to the soil were made.  Composted horse manure in one area.  Worm castings or tea in another.   Chicken manure compost's affect here.  

  • Bed Structure
Raised beds, woody beds, trellised beds, etc.

  • Lighting and shadows and boggy places

Watch the energy flows on your place.  Measure how the sunlight and shadows impact your plants, and how plant growth in a season changes.  This data helps you figure out where to plant certain species or where to place your trellis systems, etc.

  • Maps and plans
Record the location of the plants.  Bulbs are underground and you can forget them.  Draw up a plan and keep revising as you learn about your gardens.  Figure out timing for when to plant stuff for a useful harvest. You don't want your brocolli harvest all at the same time because you cannot eat it all.

  • Costs
What kind of money and inputs are going into your gardens for soil amendments, seeds and plants.  

  • Plant Wish List
What do you want to harvest?  More importantly, what do you like to eat?  Which herbs are you using for your livestock, etc.  Which give beauty?   Those are the plants that should be the most abundant in your gardens. 

  • Pest and disease observations

How do they affect your plants and what are the signs?  How do you treat for pests and disease?  Are their any plants resistant?

  • Mistakes and Victories (summary)
Summarize mistakes and victories so they can be eliminated or repeated next season.


Terroir Seeds has a good published garden journal here.  This has a lot of useful looking formating.  I will try to incorporate some of this data into my online journal.

Garage Shed Roofing Project Finished

Added the facia boards to the north and east ends of the garage shed-roof project.  This work completes this carpentry project with the exception of some bells and whistles.

In the second picture, you can see where we added some storage connections for our rakes and sundry outdoor tools.

The shed makes a nice parking spot for my little tractor and the motorcycle.  This freed up a lot of space inside the garage where we plant to establish livestock feed and dairy areas.

Soil Cube Tool Arrives in the Mail

Today a little box with my soil cube came in the mail.  I ordered the tool from soilcube.com.

Last year, there wasn't much time to plan things out for my garden and we just bought most of our plants from a nursery.  They weren't even open pollinated varieties.

Now that I've learned a small amount about gardening, I want to try to start my own plants inside this winter.

You can start plants in little containers.  But the roots can bang into the sides of the container.  Depending on when you start and the weather outside, you might have to put the little plants into bigger containers to keep them from getting all root bound.

That's where the soil cube has an advantage.  There is no container at all. The plants grow right in little cubes that you make up with the tool.

I still need to make trays, shelves, and a grow light system inside the house.  But now I have the soil cube tool, and I'm looking forward to trying it out.

How to Make a Skills Objective Gauge Gadget

In this post I show you how to make a simple gauge like the one here using Google Docs. I use these gauges for tracking my progress toward the skills objectives associated with the 13Skills site.

This is really a simple gadget to make if you have a Google account. If you don't have a Google account, you can set one up for free here.

A Google Account lets you access a variety of Google products such as Gmail, Google+, YouTube, and Google Docs. You need a Google account to use the free Google Docs. You need Google Docs to make this simple gadget.

If you already have a Google account then here is what you do.

  1. Sign in and open your Google docs page by left clicking on "Drive" on the upper menu.
  2. Click on the button "create" and a drop down menu will appear. Left click to select spreadsheet. A blank spreadsheet will open. Left click in the upper left side where it says "Untitled spreadsheet" and give it a name, like Writing Progress.
  3. Add a short name in cell A1. (Spreadsheet cells are labeled across the top by letters, and down the side by numbers. The intersection of cell column A, and row 1 is cell A1.) The cell A1 name will appear on your gadget later.
  4. Write a number in cell B1 indicating the progress toward your objective to date. For example, this is my sixth blog post so I wrote in number 6. Now left click your mouse in cell A1 and drag your mouse across to B1 so that both cells are highlighted. Now you are ready for the fun part.
  5. Click on the chart icon. (You should see it across the top of the first row, probably around the letter E. It looks like a little bar graph chart.) A chart editor menu will pop up.
  6. You should see a three word menu. Pick the middle one, "Charts" and click on it. Go down to the "more" tab and click on it. You will see four charts, including the gauge chart at the top. Click on the gauge chart. You should see an uncustomized gauge displayed in the editor.
  7. Select "customize" in the chart editor top menu. Now set the gauge range. What is your numeric objective? I want to write 130 posts so I set my range 0 to 130. Next, divide the top number by three and round off. For me that is about 43. The bottom range (red) is 0 to 43. The middle range (yellow) is 43 to 86. The top range (green) is 86 to 130. Hit return and your gauge is displayed in the spreadsheet. 
The gauge is interactive.  Whenever you finish an objective, enter the spreadsheet and add to the B1 cell. The gauge will move upwards as you move toward your objective.  
If you want to publish the interactive gauge on a blog, website, or forum message, you need to make the spreadsheet public and then copy some code into the page. Here's how.
  1. Look for the blue "Share" button at the top right above the spreadsheet.   Left click.  A "sharing settings" menu will pop up. 
  2. Under the "who has access" section, left click on change.  Select the button, "Public on the web" and then left click "save."
  3. Now go back into the spreadsheet and left click on the chart.  You will see a little arrow at the top right corner of the chart box. 
  4. Left click on that arrow and select "publish chart." 
  5. Copy the html code shown (I use Ctrl-c) and paste it to your post, page, or message (Ctrl-v). 
  6. Make sure you set the Compose/HTML button on your blogger post screen to HTML before you paste the code. (If you don't like the HTML screen, you can switch it back to Compose as soon as you save the post.)
NOTE: You need to be in the HTML editor mode on your email, blog, or forum message when you paste the code.
The interactive chart will now automatically change the gauge on the post, page, or message every time you update your progress cell B of the Google Docs spreadsheet.  Just select publish when you update the spreadsheet, and press the "done" button.  (This interaction is not instantaneous. It may take a moment for the Internet to update).  To access the spreadsheet, just go to your Google Docs Drive, and open the sheet you need to update.

To change the size of the Gauge, you have to edit the code.  Toward the end of all the code gobbleteegook, do you see "width": 600, "height":375}?  Change those numbers to "width":300,"height":187}.  That makes your gauge half the size Google Docs automatically creates it.

You could create an image from your Google Doc gauge.  It would not be interactive, but you could embed it into a forum message using the insert image button on the far left of the bottom row above.  Here's how to do this on the Survival Podcast forums: 

1) Go into the Gauge and click on the little arrow at the top right.  You should see an option "save image" just above "publish chart".  Save the image to your desktop or somewhere you can find it later.  
2) Upload it to the Internet on a photograph hosting site or blog.  
3) Make the picture public.
4) If you use Chrome, you can copy the url for the photograph by right-clicking it and selecting "copy image url."  
5) Come back here and select the picture icon on the botton left row of buttons for a message.  
6) Past the image url between the  code marks (Ctrl-V) so it will appear on a posts to the forum:
